Well-Being BC is a pivotal initiative dedicated to enhancing the well-being of students across all schools. It forms an integral part of a school-based mental health program that aims to support the holistic well-being of individuals, encompassing mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions. Central to well-being is the cultivation of safe and nurturing relationships, a sense of purpose and fulfillment, and overall life satisfaction. 

Social-emotional learning plays a vital role in nurturing essential skills and competencies, such as recognizing and managing emotions, fostering care and empathy for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, setting and achieving positive goals, and effectively handling challenging situations.

About this Project

Well-Being BC is an initiative launched by the Federation of Independent Schools Association (FISA), a non-profit society representing over 300 independent schools in British Columbia. This initiative, backed by funding from the BC Ministry of Education, was initiated in 2019 as part of a school-based mental health program designed to bolster the three pillars of well-being.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Establish a Comprehensive Resource Hub for School-Based Mental Health Initiatives: Our foremost objective was to create a robust resource hub that would support the three pillars of well-being. This encompassed the development of a comprehensive database of resources, including original content (complete with attachments, descriptions, and multiple tags), as well as aggregated resources from the web (each with descriptions, tags, links, and attachments).

  2. Intuitive Search Functionality with Progressive Filtering: We aimed to provide users with an intuitive search experience, featuring progressive filtering that eliminates the need for a “submit” button. This approach streamlines the search process, ensuring efficient access to resources.

  3. Promote Wide Public Access: To maximize the impact of the initiative, our goal was to make the resources accessible to the wider public without requiring membership or login credentials.

  4. Optimize Video Loading and Accessibility: We prioritized the optimization of video loading times and ensured that videos would be accessible across a broad spectrum of devices. Each video was designed to seamlessly integrate with one or more resource documents in PDF format.

  5. Ensure Ongoing Maintenance and Support: Recognizing the importance of maintaining the resource hub’s functionality, we committed to providing ongoing maintenance and support to Well-Being BC. This guarantees that the platform remains up-to-date, secure, and continues to serve its mission effectively.

By achieving these objectives, our project’s ultimate aim was to empower Well-Being BC to serve as a vital catalyst in promoting student well-being across educational institutions, offering a wealth of resources and support to nurture a thriving and holistic learning environment.
