Updating Your Marketing – Part 1: Branding

When everything outside your business is changing, at some point you have to make changes too. Marketing is one of the areas that can have a significant impact on your bottom line. If you haven’t updated in a while, or are seeing signs of missed opportunities, this is the time to think about changes. Here we look at some of the logo updates that some big brands have made over the years.

Coca-Cola is a great example of refreshing a look without changing very much. Other than the 1985 fiasco of “new coke” that was accompanied by new logo that was gone as fast as the new drink formula, the iconic font has been pretty much the same since 1900.

When coffee became only one of the many Starbucks offerings, the company took the opportunity to also simplify their logo – on trend at the time.

KIA did a true rebranding that they hoped their new logo would demonstrate. They wanted to get past their reputation for making boring cars, taking on a bolder, more confident, and future oriented look.

Another very purposeful rebrand occurred at Instagram in 2016. The more colourful but simplified design, melded Insta’s other apps into the fold.

What these examples show us is that there are different reasons to change your look. Rebranding is a more significant shift into new business products, a merger, or change of values or mission. A refresh is warrented whenever your logo starts to look dated or no longer gets attention.

So, what’s the state of your logo? If it’s time for a change, give us a call.
