A Tribute to Mike

I feel like these words won’t do this man justice but I’m going to try.

We lost a great man over the weekend.

A good friend, a business partner, and a mentor.
And more than that I could see what a loving husband he was, how great of a father he was.
He was an honest man, hardworking and diligent. Patient and loving. Humorous and jolly and full of life. And when it came down to moments that required seriousness, wisdom or strength, he had that too.

I keep hearing his voice in my head. His cheerful greetings at the team meeting ‘Good Morning you beautiful people’ and his silly quips ‘It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood’. He brought lightness into a room. I remember tense moments in meetings with unreasonable clients where he had a way of grounding people. This man had depth. He had presence. He made people feel steadier just by being there.

I feel deeply blessed to have witnessed such a role model because he carried himself confidently and in most situations he had this relaxed manner with a slight goofiness that was able to disarm people. But underneath that warmth was real strength.

What stays with me most is how selfless he was, especially after his diagnosis. While facing something so heavy, his focus was still on the people he loved. He mobilized all he had to make sure his wife was taken care of. All of his energy went to making sure his family was going to be ok. What an amazing model of a family man, a provider and protector.

I wish I had more words to express my gratitude for this man.
The space he created here.
The influence that he had.
The example he set.

And I wish I had better words to comfort and ease the pain for the people that loved him most.

Because this is heartbreaking.
How sad to never be able to talk again.
How fucking unfair life is.
How empty it feels.

My heart aches for our loss.

Carrying His Legacy Forward

Mike built more than just a business.
He built a place where people could do meaningful work, feel supported and be a part of something greater.

Mike and I had a vision of building this business together.

A place where people come together and do meaningful work.
A place where people look forward to coming in.
A place where people feel like family.

We wanted to build something lasting. A legacy, yes.
But more importantly, we wanted this place to be fulfilling.
Something that made people’s lives better.

That vision did not end with him.
It is now ours to carry forward.

So I want to end with a promise.

A promise to continue his legacy.
A promise to build on what he started.
A promise to uphold the values he lived by.

We will honor him in the way we serve our clients, the way we support one another, and the way we continue building this company.

His legacy is not something we simply look back on.
It is something we carry forward every day.

And we will do our best to become the kind of people he believed we could be.

I still have this image in my head of the sign above his desk:

“Desk of a Humble Genius.”

What an exquisite way of describing that man.
